Open Friday: Bitch Bad? Woman Good? The Lupe Fiasco Debate

Dear FATC,

I have heard a lot of hub bub about Lupe Fiasco’s new song Bitch Bad. I have heard people all over the we web say they love it while some women saying that they dislike the song. I don’t know how someone could really dislike the message unless they just don’t like the song itself for their own musical reasons. I read these different people (mostly feminists) who say that the song doesn’t address certain aspects of the word bitch. I don’t get it at all I think the song really brings up great conversation and don’t understand the beef with the song. What do you and the readers of Ashy to Classy think?

Tre,

Thanks for writing in brotha! I have the same sentiments as you on this subject. I understand the feminist response to the video to an extent. There was a balanced feminist perspective written by Ms. Afropolitan last week that made me set back and think about the feminist perspective on the song and video. First off I am not gonna sit here and front and not put out there that though I like Lupe he does have some contradictory lyrics and even the song itself takes a few listens to even follow it. The song can be as hard as following along to the King James Version of the bible…but I digress. Though I can see the feminist perspective on the song I definitely think that the conversation is getting pretty tainted in what Lupe should have said or displayed on the song. I think many of the detractors aren’t looking at is that the song is only 5 minutes long and there is only so much that can be addressed about the word bitch and hegemony. I think some people are actually bringing up valid critiques of the song while others are getting their panties too much in a bunch over one song that sparked a conversation that needed to be had over the word “bitch”. Regardless of the persons viewpoint on the song/video it sure has sparked conversation like only Lupe Fiasco can do.

  1. These femnist just want to complain a lot of times for no reason. Making a mountain out of a positive situation. They getting as bad as the Tea Party

  2. The message of the song and the video are on point. Beyond well executed and do something that popular artist in Hip-Hop have long abandoned – start a conversation.
There was a time when people argued that the music had a negative effect on the community it served – and people railed against that saying that the art was imitating the life not vice versa. As a young art form I agreed with that back them. But we are over 30 years into this and people need to start conceding what you put in is what you get out.

I am not saying I don’t appreciate a strip club anthem here in there – but why can’t they have that on after 11pm (BET UnCut had its place and purpose)? Our kids are coming home and watching all of this and our young girls think they are supposed to bitches and ho’s and that on some level – its not only cool but even acceptable (two different things).

Anyway I think that once again the crabs in a bucket mentality is present in the dissent on this song/ video.

  3. Why would any woman not appreciate the message in this??? I know some feminists who liked it but those going on and on about it need to sit down. It’s great art! Love Lupe…and Darryl I hate for your statement about his lyrics

  4. Honestly, the most that people SHOULD dislike about this song is the production/listening value. Meaning: you either like it or don’t.

Now, onto the message of the song: it is about confusion and the influence of certain songs in rap. Lupe isn’t trying to discuss the difference between a “bitch” and a “lady”. He wants to address the situation that comes about from hearing different things and using certain words. All he honestly cared about is what we are doing now: talking about it.

    Lupe won.

  5. As someone who’s been a Fiasco since before FNL, I can say I get Lupe’s attempt at creating conversation between folks. Lupe’s lyrics are usually ones you have to listen to more than a few times before you truly get the meaning of what he’s trying to say. With that being said “Bitch Bad” in my opinion is a song that doesn’t really lean in one direction between the men and women, rather it puts a buzz in the air that what one group thinks means A, really is interpreted as B from the other group. I’ve kept a lot of my opinions to myself when bloggers rip Lupe and his colloquialisms to pieces, but it works for him and for his fans. The song doesn’t have to address all aspects of the word “Bitch”. We know what it means, and when its used. IF women have issues with the song, I’m a little perplexed that they can get up and dance for bands, when this song clearing is used as a teaching tool for you to get your stuff together. Lupe has a way of using words to get people to see a different side of things. A talent that most MC’s don’t have. While i’m not a fan of every single song Lupe has dropped, or even all of his life views, I still have to pay credit where it’s due. He hit the nail on the head with this one. The message is powerful and one of more positivity than the other ratchetry that graces the airwaves. If chics wanna feel disrespected by, or dislike a song, this shouldn’t be the one.

  6. So I actually watched the video, studied it and and also listen to the lyrics and I clearly don’t get where the disrespect to women laid. This message is what need to brought to the music game! These females are getting the wrong idea if they think this song is disrespecting us. It’s what we’ve been dealing with for years and with Lupe being such a phenomonal artist and lyricists, he relayed an important message. Some women think it’s cute to be called a ‘bitch.’ For the life of me I could NEVER understand why they want to be called that. But this song displays it to us: you see the videos, the money, the clothes, the cars, the fame. All little girls see this and want to be like that woman…who is also calling theirselves a ‘bitch.’ Good song and video Lupe.

  7. I personally really enjoy the song and Lupe. Lupe does have his own personal MC style of rapping meant for people to think and not just bob they heads and listen. I absolutely agree with the message and one of the previous bloggers, chicks rush to the dance floor to pop it and drop it to a song degrading their character. The next generations will grow up confused about the simplest things such as relationships between boys and girls. If anyone, especially female doesn’t like the song that means they didn’t get a full understanding and will forever be held captive to the word “bitch”. Lupe’s message was to make people conscience of what they say, how they say it, and the way it’s used.
No it’s not radio ready, but I honestly don’t think that was his intention anyway. He knew he would be heard loud and clear.

  8. The songs OK. I think he could of attacked the root of the problem and not just Hip Hop. Does this mean he won’t be saying “Bitch” or “Nigger” any more? Bad Bitch and Real Nigger weigh about the same in my book. The kids with no parents around to educate them about right and wrong would still be ignorant without hip hop, they’d simply pick it up from the same place they probably pick it up from now, their environment. Lets not act like hip hop invented Drug Dealers, Pimps, Prostitutes, Strippers, Thugs, etc. Women been dressing like Lil Kim way before hip hop, where do you think she got it from? I’m glad Lupe attempted to tackle this situation, but why just attack hip hop? Its a lot of mothers out here right now that grew up dancing to Uncle Luke, and they turned out just fine. Every kid I knew in grade school had the Chronic memorized and we all turned out just fine.

  9. I totally love the song. I hope everyone gets the point
But anyway I see a lot of talk about women and what they should have gotten from this message but what about the men. Men respond to the women dressed provacative. Shoot I’ve even had my own boyfriend tell me how he likes women dressed like that.

  10. I listened to the song and I appreciated the message in it. I don’t see where this is worthy of the uproar it’s getting. If the messages were negative, then I’d understand.

  11. Thought the song concept and video was crazy!! Digged the shit out of it! I reallt cant see how they have beef with a positive track
